The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared an outbreak of Ebola Virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain.
At this time, the outbreak constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), although it does not meet the criteria of a pandemic emergency.
There are currently no known cases in Singapore. However, individuals are advised to remain vigilant, particularly if travelling to or returning from affected regions.
Symptoms of Ebola
Symptoms of Ebola may appear between 2 to 21 days after exposure, with the average onset occurring between 8 to 10 days.
Common symptoms include:
- Fever
- Body aches
- Fatigue
These symptoms may later progress to:
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Unexplained bleeding
Advisory for Travellers
Individuals who have recently travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, or surrounding countries, and who develop any of the symptoms above, should seek medical attention immediately.
When visiting a healthcare provider, individuals are encouraged to inform the clinic or hospital of their recent travel history to facilitate prompt assessment and appropriate precautionary measures.
